Melkbos Bach/Strand

As you head into the Cape West Coast the first beach you’ll discover is Melkbos Beach. Because its close proximity to Cape Town, you still have magnificent views of both Table Mountain and the historical Robben Island.

Melkbos Strand is another popular water sports beach with great conditions for wind and kite surfing as well as being the home to the NSRI’s Stations 18. Take a long leisurely stroll along the stretch of beach and if you’re felling full of bravado you can dash into the icy cold water, but this is generally not recommended without a wetsuit!

Milnerton Flea Market

Milnerton Market has a collection of junk and gems sold in an open-air bazaar forum on a dusty seaside patch of ground. Good include DIY tools, furniture, clothes, mobile phones, cosmetics, toiletries, crystals, jewellery, car part, IT equipment, biltong, CD’s and DVD’s. Wander around looking at the market and its characters while munching on a hot pancake and sipping ginger beer. This market is not touristy and has a local feel with a genuine flea-market quality attracting regular visitors that frequent the stalls every weekend. A bazaar full of both the beautiful and the bizarre.

Milnerton Golf Club

Tucked between spectacular landmarks, the Milnerton Golf Club provides elegant apex views of Cape Town and Table Mountain, Robben Island, and the Rietvlei Conservation Area.

The course is a Par 72 has 18 holes and is typical of the links-styles course, The halfway house is a great place to have a light meal and after your round, o can enjoy your reward by spending a while in the club’s five-star lounge which is mere steps off the beach.

Visitors will be pleased to know that play here is open to the public. However, it is highly recommended that you book your tee-off times ahead to avoid disappointment.

The Watershed is a beautiful and vibrant space to shop, such as ceramics, textiles, furniture, fashion and jewellery. Many of the traders sell unique products and arts and crafts. The Watershed is located on Dock Road, next to the Two Oceans Aquarium and is open 7 days a week from 10AM – 5PM.

There are two markets in the V&A Waterfront, the V&A Food Market, know for its street food stands, craft beer and live music, and the Oranjezicht City Farm Market which is held every Saturday in Granger Bay. Independent local farmers and artisanal food producers offer a wide variety of healthy produce.

Atlantic Beach Golf Club

Located just 15 minutes from Bloubergstrand, the Atlantic Beach Golf Course is an 18-hole links-style course that lies only 700m off the Ocean and provides keen golfers with exciting challenges, chips and shots that change with the winds.

Mark Muller designed the course and golfers can enjoy fairways of well looked after Cynoden Gulf Green and greens of pristine Kikuyu.

The course is open to members, visitors, societies, and golf days. Book your tee-off time ahead to avoid disappointment. Club facilities include a pro shop: fitness centre; driving range: practice area.

Koeberg Nature Reserve

Located just off the R27, the Koeberg Nature Reserve in Melkbosstrand provides information on the Koeberg Power Station as well as guides for tow walking trails in the reserve, West Coast Strandveld and Dune veld.

Animals to look out for are Grysbok, Steenbok, Bontebok and Springbok. Caracal, the African wild cat, grey mongoose, and genet can also be spotted. For Twitchers, 153 species of birds have been recorded at Koeberg, including ostrich and the African Fish Eagle.

Hiking in Koeberg Nature Reserve

There are two hiking rails in the Koeberg Nature Reserve. You will be able to pick up a good map and birding pamphlets at the info kiosk.

The Dikkop Trail is a circular walk of 9.5-23,23km which includes pristine Strandveld, Dune veld and 2km walk along the beach. The walk is most spectacular in spring when the wildflowers along the route are in bloom.

The Grysbok Trail is a two-hour walk starting at the Visitor Centre and includes a stretch along the beach and passes a salt marsh which is rich in birdlife in the winter months. The Grysbok Trail sidles around the main reactor, heading for the beach on the Cape Town side. It twists along the ridge of the dunes before winding down to the sea past a small saltpan.

The Rietflei Reserve

The Rietvlei Nature Reserve is a beautiful wetland area in Milnerton. It also includes a freshwater lake. There are 102 different bird species including pelicans and flamingos that frequent the wetland, with 70 of these regularly visiting the area each year. It’s a bird watching paradise!

South African Air Force Musuem

Any flying enthusiast should visit the South African Air Force Museum branch at the Ysterplaat Air Force Base.

Responsible for recording the history of aviation in South Africa, Sir Force Museum has collected records and articles of historical significance and have preserved aircraft. These are all on display at Ysterplaat. The Africa Aerospace and Defence Show are held twice a year – a perfect time to see flying displays.

The Cape West Coast

The Cape West Coast stretches from Cape Town as far as the border with the Northern Cape at Touw’s River. All along the stretch of coastline is a series of quaint historic towns and fishing villages. Lamberts Bay, Paternoster, Saldanha and Langebaan are but a few names of these great and unique destinations.

The little town of Darling, kilometres outside of Table View, deserves a stop, especially in September for its Wildflower and Orchid show and for its locally produced wines. The West Coast National Park lies a little further up the West Coast, where friends and family can sample the Spring flower season. Just next door to the park is The Fossil Park, which has uncovered over 200 different species of animals, many of which are new to today’s science.
